An online workshop: Learn Shibori and tie dye folding techniques, and about mixing up a vat of pre reduced indigo

Learn the ancient Japanese art of Shibori or indigo tie-dye.  First students will learn techniques for tying, folding, and dipping your fabric.  Then students will learn how to prepare a vat of indigo.  I will go over 30 shibori folds and binds to give you a full understanding of the resist process.

Due to social distancing this workshop will be a virtual workshop.  I recommend setting it up in a place where you can get a little messy (due to the nature of indigo).  If you can’t go outdoors you can put paper or plastic down to protect the floor (that’s what I do in my Brooklyn apt).  If you can’t set up and want to watch the demo, that is ok.  Each student will get a pdf with instructions after the class.

I’m also available to set up private workshop or corporate events- please email to set something up. Thanks!

Supply List-

Got my Resources Page linked below for my suggested supplies: https://onyxartstudios.com/blogs/news/online-indigo-tie-dye-shibori-supply-list-resources-page

Indigo Kit- I recommend the kit on the list above- if you use a different one make sure it’s pre reduced indigo.

– a couple of 100% cotton pieces to dye.  (ie t-shirt, pillowcase, tea towels, apron, quilting fabric) You can also dye linen or rayon, but polyester is not recommended- it will not take the dye.

– 5 Gallon Bucket that can get stained

– Something to stir with

– Scissors

– Gloves

– Plastic or paper to put on the ground

– Iron

– Rubber Bands and String

-Pennies

-Nails

-Tongue Depressors or popsicle sticks

-Sulphate free laundry detergent or “dyers detergent” Syntrapol

– Free Zoom account

You can buy this kit with your ticket at check out or you can buy your own kit. If you purchase this kit I will send it to you 7 business days before the class.

You can also buy just the ticket and use another kit if you prefer.

All skill levels are welcome. Multiple pieces can be dyed in the vat and I would encourage you to invite friends to share supplies.  I ask that each person watching purchases a ticket.  Please contact me for questions!  This workshop should be very fun!

We reserve the right to cancel the workshop if there are not enough sign ups.  In the event that we must cancel, you will get a full refund.  This event will be recorded, and available for students to view for 30 days. The video is for the participants only and not intended for distribution. Thanks!
