We can’t wait to see you and share our love and passion for Puerto Rico! A new season to celebrate and uplift each other sharing in the arts and culture!

Children learn Afro-Puerto Rican drum and dance, beats and moves with Segunda Quimbamba! We’ve been teaching the rich cultural folkloric music known as la Bomba and la Plena for 30 years in Jersey City and beyond. Fun, energetic and engaging! This program will culminate with a beloved Puerto Rican Holiday Tradition: Neighborhood Parrandas on December 17! WEPA!!!

Children’s classes start on November 5 – December 17. Classes are at the Nimbus Arts Center in Downtown Jersey City.

Students can register through November 19. After this date no new students are accepted into the class.

Dance classes begin with a warm up. Exposure to Bomba and Plena learning of rhythms, basic steps and simple choreography done also dancing in pairs. Maximum 15 students per class.

Students learn about singing and chorus, call-and-response methods in the Spanish language and the beloved Plena dancing traditions.

Attend biweekly Zoom meetings for additional practice, discussions of cultural history, the instruments, the rhythms, the diaspora or whatever is on YOUR mind, community building together in a continuing shared learning space.

CHILDREN’s Dance and Drum Exposure Program Fall 2023

November 5 – December 17 – culminates in a community celebration with Neighborhood Parrandas con Segunda Quimbamba!

Program: 1:00 – 2:00 PM Sunday Afternoons~

Dance Program is on Sunday afternoons at 1 :00 – 1:30 PM

Dance: Students (4 – 11 years old ) Focus on Plena, and exposure to Bomba dance

Class 1:00 – 1:30 PM

Drum Program is on Sunday afternoons at 1 :30 – 2:00 PM

Drum Plena: Students (7 – 12 years old)

Class: 1:30 – 2:00 PM

Program Fees:

New students: $125

Returning Students Disc: $105

COMBO Drum plus Dance Classes Special Offer: $220 get all the classes!

Student must be at least 7 years old to register for the combo dance and drum classes.

What are my transportation/parking options for getting to and from the event?

Trains: Take PATH to Grove Street STOP, then a short walk east towards the water on Columbus turning left onto Warren Street, venue at 329 Warren Street. Or Exchange Place STOP walk west on Columbus away from the water to Warren street turn right for venue.

Car: Limited street or paid parking available in the area of Downtown Jersey City.

What can I bring into the studio?

For dance, dress comfortably with soft shoes/sneakers; a limited number of dance skirts and drums are available in class. If you own a dance skirt or drum please bring it with you. Bring your own water, personal hand sanitizer and mask.

If you easily can, yes.
